The City of Forest Hills encourages residents to commit to not mowing their lawn throughout April in conjunction with the Cumberland River Compact for “No Mow April.” By embracing this initiative, residents can contribute to water quality, soil health and pollinator populations. The City of Forest Hills supports various "rewilding" efforts across Nashville by restoring spaces to their native landscapes.
The Cumberland River Compact recognizes the link between healthy lawns and water quality. Transitioning yards to resemble native habitats prior to urbanization offers conservation advantages that support local waterways and ecosystems. The Compact urges residents to give their mower a break to contribute to these vital efforts.
City of Forest Hills Vice Mayor Henry Trost said, “’No Mow April’ empowers individuals to become environmental stewards by embracing the growth of their grass. Participants pledge to let their grass grow tall throughout the month, contributing to environmental conservation efforts. Allowing grass to grow can provide a greater variety of flowering plants that are typically considered ‘weeds’ like dandelions and clovers. These ‘weeds’ actually act as important sources for food for pollinators.”
Participants will receive a complimentary No Mow Nashville sign, signaling their commitment to the program and educating neighbors about the benefits of allowing grass to grow. In the 2024 initiative, over 200 yards were pledged, resulting in improved water quality, reduced carbon emissions and enhanced pollinator habitats. The Cumberland River Compact and the City of Forest Hills aim for increased participation this spring. To register for “No Mow April” visit No Mow Month 2025 - Cumberland River Compact.
